About Joseff

I am a coastal scientist with nearly 10 years of experience in coastal research, monitoring, fieldwork, and consultancy. I am a Research Fellow with Coastal Marine Applied Research (CMAR) at the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³», a research-informed consultancy that provides specialist expertise to support the sustainable management of coastal, marine, and estuarine environments.
Ìý
My research focuses on coastal morphodynamics, shoreline change, and coastal hazard forecasting across diverse and dynamic coastal settings. Recent work has combined multi-decadal coastal monitoring records with numerical modelling tools, including ShoreTrans and XBeach, alongside community science initiatives such as CoastSnap, to assess the impacts of sea-level rise, intertidal coastal squeeze, and habitat vulnerability. This research considers local wave climates, sediment budgets, geological controls, and coastal management frameworks, including Shoreline Management Plans (SMPs) and the National Coastal Erosion Risk Mapping programme (NCERM).
Ìý
I am currently a principal contributor to a multi-agency research programme investigating rip current dynamics in South Africa. This work integrates field observations, satellite remote sensing, and machine-learning techniques to identify and monitor rip systems, with the aim of developing operational forecasting tools to support regional lifesaving services and improve beach safety.
Ìý
My expertise includes coastal monitoring and field data collection, encompassing measurements of waves, currents, and water levels, as well as high-precision topographic and bathymetric surveying using RTK-GNSS, hydrographic survey systems, and passive seismic techniques. I also have extensive experience processing and analysing large environmental datasets, including UAV photogrammetry, LiDAR, multibeam bathymetry, and coastal imaging data.
Ìý
Through CMAR and the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»'s Centre for Coastal and Ocean Processes and Engineering (C-COPE), I have worked with national and international organisations, government agencies, local authorities, and research partners to address applied coastal-management challenges. Recent projects have included coastal change and adaptation studies, monitoring and modelling of beach and dune systems, coastal flood inundation mapping, and evidence-based support for shoreline management and resilience planning.
Ìý
My collaborators and clients have included the Environment Agency, Cornwall Council, , and a range of international research partners in South Africa. Prior to joining the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³», I worked for the Programme, gaining extensive experience in long-term coastal monitoring, data management, and applied consultancy. This combination of scientific research and practical coastal-management experience enables me to develop solutions that are both scientifically robust and operationally relevant.
